Technology connects truckers to freight, people nearby

Posted on Oct 10, 2014 in Technology

Truckers who own their vehicles loathe trips with an empty truck bed. But when Mishael Israel faced the money-sapping bind on a recent morning, he had a solution. An Uber-style solution. Israel’s first freight pickup awaited about 60 miles from his Los Angeles-area home. Before leaving, he accepted a $30 pickup close by through an app called Cargomatic to deliver some sprinkler parts. He more than paid for the gas used for the longer-distance job without a significant detour, he said. Cargomatic is aiming to do for short-range trucking what Uber and Lyft have done for taxi drivers: use the capabilities of smartphones to connect drivers to freight and people nearby that need moving. With more than $3 million raised from Volvo’s venture capital fund and others, the Los Angeles startup is already helping hundreds of companies. Truckers...

PeopleNet upgrades in-cab scanning with Pegasus TransTech

Posted on Oct 6, 2014 in Finance, Technology

PeopleNet, a Trimble company and provider of fleet mobility technology, announced an upgrade to its in-cab scanning capabilities in partnership with Pegasus TransTech. When using scanning services remotely, drivers can now scan and transmit critical transportation documents using a Wi-Fi network to reduce cost. “We are excited to give drivers a way to instantly and inexpensively scan and send important information such as bills of lading and signed delivery receipts right from the cab,” said Tom Dorazio, director of product management at PeopleNet. “The Wi-Fi enabled in-cab scanning feature is most attractive to drivers who are traveling long haul routes and aren’t going back to a terminal each night. By empowering drivers to transmit information in this manner, it eliminates the need to find a location offering scanning services, which can take a driver off route, or choosing to...

Tolls are one of the top five daily expenses for many motor carriers and the Bestpass platform helps fleets better track and use data about toll prices and usage, according to Bestpass. Posted on Oct 6, 2014 in Equipment, Technology

SmartDrive Systems announced the availability of its new SmartDrive Assurance product line, a video-based safety program which can be used to reduce risks on the road and improve overall fleet operating environments, according to the company. By using a range of different cameras both inside and outside the cab, as well as integration with the company’s software, fleet managers can see what happens during an event from all around the vehicle. “Carriers operate in a complex environment, with new regulations, advanced technology and an explosion of data coming from all areas of their business,” said Steve Mitgang, CEO of SmartDrive. “Unfortunately, fleets are too often forced into a ‘one-size-fits-all’ solution as a way to manage that complexity. Wireless roadside inspections enter field testing phase

Posted on Oct 5, 2014 in Safety, Technology

Beginning in December 2015, up to 1,000 drivers will have their logbooks, licenses and other credentials inspected by the Department of Transportation while moving at highway speed. The reward for a clean inspection? Keep on rolling. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has been working to make a concept called wireless roadside inspection (WRI) reality for a number of years. The project is entering its third and final phase called a field operational test (FOT). Innovative Software Engineering (ISE) is a company that offers telematics and custom software development services. The FMCSA recently awarded a three-year FOT project to ISE to evaluate the viability of WRI for commercial motor vehicles. In 2010, ISE participated in the pilot phase of the WRI program where it was the first firm to successfully demonstrate the viability of WRI technology during...
